Do not follow your Heart

2024/10/06 | Dave Kull

In this sermon Dave Kull challenges the popular advice to “follow your heart.” He warns that the heart can be deceitful (Jeremiah 17:9) and that life flows from it (Proverbs 4:23), so you should guard and tune your heart to God rather than follow every impulse. Using the battlefield-of-the-mind image (Ephesians 6) and a guitar-tuning metaphor, he urges you to renew your mind (Romans 12:2), take captive every thought for Christ (2 Corinthians 10:5), and listen to the Holy Spirit. Practical takeaway: practice daily “retuning” — Scripture, quiet time, confession, apology, or counseling — to replace destructive patterns with God’s truth. Reflect and act: guard your heart, retune to the Spirit, and live by truth, not feeling.
